Be in the picture

As Mother’s Day approaches here in the UK, many of us are thinking about what can we do to show our thanks for everything that our mums do just naturally for us. One thing that I find many mums are reluctant to do though, is be in the photographs with their children. As a female that is never happy with her looks, I really understand this and can empathise. As a photographer who’s career is driven by the love of memories though, I cannot urge you ladies out there enough, to stop worrying about the insecurities and simply, ‘Be in the Picture’.

As mentioned on many occasions, I love photography because it reminds me of the piles of photographs that we got to look through as children. There is nothing nicer than laughing at old hair styles, clothes, wallpaper and toys. As a child, you don’t care about what you look like and what you are wearing and if you are photographed or not. So looking back at these images bring about wonderful memories. It is a shame, that we reach an age, where the opposite is true to the point that we won’t be in the photograph. So what will you and your children have to look back on in years to come?

When I look back at photographs of my mum, I see a woman of style and of fun. I love the images of her dressed up, as much as I love the ones of her taken off guard. I love them all, because it is heartwarming to see my mum as an amazing, all round lady as well as my mum. I love the photographs because they are of her, not because of what her dress size is. I love the photographs because they remind me of a happy fun-filled childhood and not because of a picture perfect set up.

So this Mother’s Day, get yourself in the photo. Get the photograph taken of you with the children as they bring you breakfast in bed, because all too soon, they’ll be too busy to arrange to do this. Agree to be in the photograph as you go for lunch, because it will remind you of a lovely day. Arrange your own photoshoot as a present to yourself, because when those babies and toddlers grow up, they will be fascinated to know what you dressed like and you will simply see those gorgeous, precious cuddles with them, when you look back on the images.
